Our class blog

Hi everyone,

I have added all of you as blog authors, so you should be able to add original posts, not just comment. Please post your thoughts about the issues and ethics of blogging, and respond to at least 2 of your fellow students' posts.
Please let me know if you have any questions or run into any problems!

Thanks!
Amber

  1. Hello Class!
I like the idea of being able to share a thought and receive thoughts about what I write. I have viewed blogs before and was amazed at the way many people blog to have their voice heard. This is the first time I have participated in a blog. I think because I feel secure with the viewers that will read what I write.
    Blog-on, Friends! LOL

  2. I have never blogged before so I am lost. I guess I'll go back and read the instructions again.

  3. I am with you on this, not really sure where to post what.

  4. I think that blogging would be a great way for older students to keep informed and updated in class. A blog can be used like Denee said, to receive feedback on your writing. This can be a way for high chool students to write a paper or share thoughts about a topic and the teacher can blog back to them comments about their writing. This can be done outside of school and therefore take less time. I have never written on a blog before and am only comfortable doing it because I know everyone in our class. I would not feel comfortable blogging my thoughts and feelings for strangers to read. It will be fun to blog for this course though!

  5. Denee,
I too have seen blogs that other people have written and was impressed by the amount of details and voice that they portrayed in their writings. They told about their thoughts and feelings for the day and I felt like I was reading a page out of a novel. I am not a person who likes to share my personal thoughts and feelings with the whole world, but I think those that like to do it ... more power to them!! Everyone has a way to voice their emotions and for those who feel comfortable putting it on their blog thats fine, and those who like to share with close family and friends face to face that is fine also. I look forward to blogging with you on here!~!

  6. Blogging would be another great tool to enhance the writing process for students within a classroom setting. It gives students opportunities for creative publishing and peer/teacher reflections. The site, KidzBlog, would be perfect for an elementary class with one computer. Offline, students can safely enter stories and even illustrate them using KidzLog. The teacher chooses later if online publication is necessary. I love the creativity involved!

  7. Teaching kindergarten, I find it hard to think of ways my students can blog. We are just learning the concepts of letters, words, sentences, and thoughts. I do like the idea of blogging for myself and parents and then sharing with my students. I think it could be used a lot like a wiki. Room parents could post information and supplies needed for classroom parties and others could reply with volunteering to bring things. I also like the idea of a parents brag blog. Parents could post pics and such about family activities, achievements, and trips.
I like the idea of blogging to have your voice heard by many many people. I have never been to a blog site because I am sketchy about the people hearing my voice. As with other technology, I would rather voice my opinion and news to a real person. Students would need to be monitored and protected as they blog. You never know what others might post.

  8. I don't blog but I do read some. I find some to be interesting, entertaining, and some to be a complete waste of time. Blogging gives people a voice. No one forces you to read blogs and they are a great outlet for the frustrated, the bored, the comedians, the gamers, the pessimists, the optimists, etc.
When it comes to incorporating blogging into my classroom, I am unsure. I tend to stay away from putting any of my students on the internet. I think you could run into some trouble and I would rather be safe than sorry. I do however think blogging would be a great way to communicate with your classroom parents daily or weekly. During the school year I create a newsletter to send home weekly with my students. The newsletters inform the parents on what has been going on in the classroom and what to look forward to. I think I could blog that info for my parents to read. -Just an idea-

  9. Sandra,

I think you are right! It would be a fantastic way for students to enhance their writing process. It would be a lot more fun to do it this way rather than on paper. I think they would like it!

  10. I agree with Ashley; it's a scary idea to think of putting our kids "out there" on the internet. It would take a lot of advance planning and teaching the kids about safety before even starting. That being said, I think the idea of an online journal is fantastic! It would be a way for students to get their thoughts out there without having to read it out loud in front of the class. This kind of format is ideal for those incredibly bright young people who, for a myriad of reasons, never seem to be heard.

  11. Blogging is seen as a "cool" thing. So finding a way to incorporate it into your lessons would help motivate your students. I think the online journal would be very interesting! I like that idea.

  12. Ashley,
I believe that motivation is also a key ingredient in the writing process! Especially for kids who struggle with the phonetic component, writing on a new format and for a different audience could be just the necessary motivation to keep trying.

  13. Just when I really thought that I had this down and blogged correctly I run into a problem. I don't know if I blogged in response to blogs (it is all very confusing I know) in the right place. I thought that I had but now I am not so sure.

Anyway, I love reading your ideas because I think that I could use a lot of them. I love what Jessica said about communicating with parents and parents communicating with each other. I had a parent who was very upset that I could not give out other families personal information. If I had a classroom blog site they could choose to communicate there to gather info from each other. Good idea. And if anyone can let me know whether I blogged in the right place that would put my mind at ease. Thanks! Rachael S. signing out!!

  14. I am not really sure how this works! I am just replying in the "post a comment" section. How do I just create a new post to the blog??? Any ideas? I guess I could read the directions!!

  15. Help! I'm really struggling here! I went to the create a blog spot and before I knew it (not that I wanted to) I was setting up a new website. I read the directions and apparently I've missed something.

  17. I am really looking forward to using my class blog this upcoming school year. I think that this gives the teacher more options for assessment and activities. As an eighth grade teacher, my only concern is protecting the identity and personal information of my students who post. I'm looking at my options for classroom blogs that allow the kids to participate, but do so safely.
